Depression

Depression Crisis Question and Answers

Q: I have been feeling depressed for some time now. It seems as though I have just been lying around with absolutely no energy, no desire to live my life and this has been going on for over a year. My doctor told me that I need to begin taking an antidepressant but I am a Christian and I believe in the healing power of God. Am I faithless if I begin to take the medication. Will I release myself of God's healing miracles if I don't wait for my miracle. I'm lost and desperate. Anne

A:  Dear Ann, Depression is linked to millions of Americans and the only way to determine the proper treatment for it is to determine the underlying cause of your depression. Many doctors will subscribe the same drug for all patients who are depressed without first obtaining the reason behind this illness. That is why many people choose to seek the advise of more than one doctor, more than a general MD, including an opinion from a state licensed psychologist or psychiatrist. Depression can be caused from a chemical imbalance in the brain and medicine is often prescribed for this reason. If your doctor has prescribed medication, and they have a back round of treating this illness, then I highly recommend that you heed their advise and take the medication. I would never tell anyone to go against their doctor's advise yet you can begin the medication and seek a second or third opinion if it makes you feel more comfortable about your decision.

God is indeed a God of healing and of miracles. I have personally been present to witness His awesome healing power on numerous occasions. Nothing in my life has ever effected me as the presence of God and during these times of healings, as we have seen many healed, we have also seen many who were not healed. Is it because they lacked faith? Absolutely not! Sadly, many people are going to their graves because false doctrine is being taught pounding it into their minds that if they had more faith that they would have been healed.

There is nothing further from the truth. Just as it is God's will to heal some at certain times, it is also God's will to take many of us home to be with Him. Who can ever know the infinite wisdom of Almighty God? Never should anyone ever believe that they are ill or not healed because God wants them to be sick. God does not bring sickness upon us, Satan does. Satan's desire is "to steal, kill and destroy."  That is not to say that God does  not allow us to suffer illness at times and when we do, there is always a reason and many, many, many times that reason is because if it were not for our illness, we would not seek the face and Kingdom of God. Many times our illness is indeed our Salvation, for through our illness comes our seeking and through our seeking comes our finding a relationship with God. A relationship that would have never been developed if we had not been ill. Romans 8:28 speaks clearly to us; "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Yes, God can intervene and heal in some instances—and certainly we should come to Him in prayer whatever we face, including a physical or emotional problem. The Bible tells us to "pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man (or woman) is powerful and effective" (James 5:16).

But this doesn't mean we shouldn't seek medical advice when we are sick. If I broke my arm, I'd get the best medical treatment possible—and the same is true if I had an emotional problem. God loves you, and He wants you to get better. Let the Psalmist's words encourage you: "Though you have made me see troubles ... from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up" (Psalm 71:20
